The ATL team has successfully completed the Havets Hus tunnel aquarium refurbishment

Located in Lysekil on the stunning west coast of Sweden the Havets Hus aquarium has been welcoming visitors since 1993. The aquarium displays over 100 mainly native species of fish many found locally in the area. Despite its modest size the Havets Hus aquarium is one of the most popular and visited destinations in the Bohuslän region. The local team of conservationists has achieved international recognition for their work of over 20 years being involved in breeding and releasing endangered species. Their most recent project aimed at conserving the critically endangered thornback ray has been underway. All of this from the aquarium in a small Swedish town like Lysekil!

Like many aquarium attractions the visitors journey begins in the shore area and continues through the different habitats of the ocean, down to the depths of the seafloor. Havets Hus benefits from excellent local water quality ensuring the aquariums are continuously fed with sea water from the Gullmar fjord, collected a depth of 32 metres. With constant salinity levels of around 30 to 33 parts per thousand the water quality is very good, free of contaminants and with good oxygenation. These are all prerequisite for the wellbeing of the aquarium fish and animals.

ATL has a long standing relationship with Havets Hus aquarium having successfully worked together to deliver some amazing projects to date. The Havets Hus tunnel aquarium refurbishment being no exception. The tunnel aquarium is one of the original concrete displays and forms the centre piece of the exhibition. After many years of service it was established that the tunnel aquarium needed to undergo an extensive refurbishment. ATL responded to a public works tender and were successfully appointed as specialist aquarium works contractor. Our work scope included the replacement water proof tank lining, acrylic refurbishment and resealing.

Other specialist contractors completed concrete repairs to the tank structure. Once this work was done our team could commence the tank preparations, removal of all sealants and application of GRP composite tank lining.

The Havets Hus tunnel aquarium refurbishment project marks the conclusion of another successful project for ATL. It really has been a joy to work on this project and to see the continued success of the Havets Hus aquarium.

ATL has completed work at RSPB Freiston Shore

A new bird viewing hide has been built at the RSPB Freiston Shore reserve, near Boston in Lincolnshire.

The RSPB Freiston shore bird hide project was designed by Norwegian bird hide Specialists Biotope . Biotope provided a finished design for birdwatching, combining architectural design alongside caring for nature. The new hide creates an open and inviting architecture aimed at connecting people with nature. This hide achieves the careful balance between the need for visibility and shelter to attract visitors, whilst blending into the landscape and remaining sympathetic to the sensitivities of the birds and their habitats.

ATL was appointed to the project by principle contractor Walker Construction Ltd. Faced with some of the harshest Lincolnshire ‘Wash’ weather, Walker Construction battled through it all to deliver the building shell.

RSPB Freiston Shore is an internationally important saltmarsh lagoon habitat. This new bird hide will provide a unique outlook over the lagoon. The hide will be partially submerged underwater so visitors to the hide will have the opportunity to view through ATL’s viewing panels and be eyelevel with the birds sitting in and around the water.

This is just another example of the breadth of ATL’s project experience. We wish the RSPB Freiston shore project every future success. You can view more details about Freiston shore here

The ATL team has recently completed works on a new enclosure for penguins at Skegness Natureland

Skegness Natureland is primarily known for rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned and injured harbor and grey seal pups along the Lincolnshire coast. Their dedicated work has been ongoing since being founded in 1965 by John Yeadon. It was officially opened by Princess Margaret and since that time, Skegness Natureland has become one of the UK’s most iconic coastal wildlife rescue centers. Each year, the sanctuary takes in around 70 seal pups, caring for them in its dedicated seal hospital until they are strong enough to be released back into the wild.

While seal rescues remain at the heart of Skegness Natureland’s mission, the sanctuary also houses a diverse collection of animals including African penguins, meerkats, alpacas, caimen, tropical butterflies, and reptiles. The old penguin enclosure facilities were due a much needed upgrade and ATL were the chosen specialist partner to assist Skegness Natureland with their project.

The ATL team have been doing it again- this time successfully completing the Sealife Helsinki ocean tank refurbishment

Its nearly 25 years since the ATL team originally installed the SEALIFE aquarium in Helsinki, Finland. Situated a 10 minute tram ride from the metropolis of the city and adjacent to the historic Lina maki amusement park, Sealife Helsinki has attracted millions of visitors since first opening its doors. It was therefore decided that now, was the right time to refurbish and upgrade the large ocean tank feature to provide an enhanced visitor experience.

Once again ATL was Merlin Entertainments chosen partner to undertake the specialist works for the Sealife Helsinki ocean tank refurbishment. Back in the late Autumn specialist Sealife teams ensured the fish were carefully removed and rehomed before the ocean tank was drained down. Our team then undertook removing the large theatre window which allowed safe, low level access into the tank for the local demolition contractors to begin removal of the outdated tank decor. With the window removed and the tank empty of debris our technicians set up and painstakingly prepared the tank for the application of a new water proof lining system.

ATL team painstakingly preparing the Sealife Helsinki ocean tank for lining

After 25 years of trouble free service the acrylic viewing panels were in need of some care. Once all of the original sealants were removed, the walk through acrylic tunnel sections, portholes and vertical cylinder panels were all cosmetically polished inside and out returning them to new condition.

A new formed acrylic ocean theatre window was produced and delivered to site. On arrival this presented us with the usual tight access challenge starting with getting it physically into the building in -10C with snow on the ground! As ever the ATL installation team worked their magic and the panel was safely installed.

There had been a number of historic modifications made to the original LSS filtration system set up. These modifications had not all necessarily resulted in improved water parameters. So it was decided that whilst the tank was empty to suggest and make some ATL improvements to the filtration system. ATL’s technicians revaluated all of the system equipment and made changes that have now resulted in major improvements to water flow and resulting clarity. We also installed new full flow ultra violet disinfection to the different systems. All of this work delivers the water parameter improvements needed and equally important ensures the LSS systems are easier to monitor and maintain by the on site team.

Seizing the rare opportunity to have the ocean tank emptied presented a blank canvass, so the SEALIFE Helsinki team deigned a new aquascape they wanted to achieve. Once again ATL worked closely with their specialist partners Koda Creative . Together we delivered amazing new theming concept with realistic tropical reef scenery, including swim throughs and two large totem head iconic features. A selection of ATL’s own artificial corals were installed to really bring the scenery to life.

During refilling our team returned to site to commission the new life support systems and to conduct final inspections and checks. Everything pleasingly worked to plan and the tank restocking completed successfully.

The exhibit officially reopened last week. We are all really pleased with the end result and this successfully concludes another amazing aquarium refurbishment project that ATL the leaders in aquarium technology team has delivered. I have no doubt that the SEALIFE Helsinki ocean tank refurbishment will ensure it remains Finlands premier tropical aquarium attraction.

ATL have recently completed works on Bristol Zoo’s central African forest project

Following a successful tender process, ATL were awarded the specialist crocodile exhibit work scope on Bristol Zoo’s central African project by Beard construction Ltd. This state of the art facility will house critically endangered West African slender – snouted crocodiles and is located at the new Bristol zoo site located just off junction 17 of the M5 motorway. The facility opens to the public on the 1st April 2026.

Working alongside the exhibit designers Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios we helped develop the specific exhibit detailing. As with all projects the preplanning and specification of cast in pipework is vital to ensure it was included during the pool construction works. This included bespoke drain box sumps with dedicated air feeds to clear detritus and debris reducing the need for keepers to enter the exhibit in operation. Our GRP composite lining technicians provided bi colour water proofing to the entire exhibit areas including the extensive off show and back of house areas.

We designed and manufactured the large semi submerged low iron heat soak toughened and laminated glass viewing panels. The overhanging roof canopy of the building presented our skilled glazing technicians with a challenging installation. However using state of the art robotic vacuum lifting equipment the windows were safely installed and successfully sealed in position.

Bristol Zoo’s animal team were heavily involved with the concept design of the exhibit theming based around very specific habitat requirements for the crocodiles and fish. To help visualisation and to ensure continuity between initial concept and final design a 3d scale model was commissioned from reputed attraction industry expert David Lazenby This model proved invaluable and was used to refine and develop the final habitat design.

A scale model of the Bristol Zoo crocodile theming

As the exhibit matures it will be full of natural planting and ATL incorporated a series of bespoke composite hydroponic planters into the back drops. To closely replicate the conditions found in the wild, these planters are directly fed with fast flowing system water before returning back to the pool.
Meanwhile behind the scenes our life support technicians installed all of the dedicated life support system (LSS) equipment for the crocodile exhibit. This included a large drum filter, full flow ultra violet disinfection, Co2 injection and exhibit water temperature regulation using energy efficient heat pumps. Key water parameters are constantly monitored with probes and sensors linked to the environmental services panels. Other specialist contractors provided a rain water recovery and reverse osmosis system providing top up water for the system.

This is the latest in a long line of project collaborations between ATL and Bristol Zoo dating back into the 1990’s. We are proud to have supported Bristol Zoo’s central african forest project. Rather than traditional zoo enclosures, the site is being developed as an immersive conservation zoo, where visitors experience large, naturalistic habitats designed around the needs of wildlife. We certainly look forward to seeing Bristol Zoo’s approach flourish into the future.

Our team are now back home having successfully delivered the SEALIFE Legoland Florida Aquarium

Throughout last year our dedicated team of technicians worked tirelessly to produce the exciting aquarium displays for the latest addition to the SEALIFE estate, this time in Florida. The Legoland site located in Winterhaven, Florida has been expanded to include a brand new SEALIFE aquarium complex. The SEALIFE aquarium opened last week and is being hailed as ‘a theme park under the sea’ more details can be found here

We have been building high quality aquariums for the hugely successful SEALIFE chain since 1989, so as a trusted partner we were well placed to deliver their latest and most adventurous SEALIFE project. As part of the team ATL designed and fabricated the entire series of stunning aquariums ranging from seamlessly linked freshwater tanks, large sectional harbour tank, rockpools, seahorse shallow seas, coral reef and a wall filling jellyfish display. The majority of these tanks were with fabricated completely at ATL’s factory.

As well as building stunning naturalistic coral reef back drops the ATL team were instrumental in producing the variety of artificial features. Wow – the Merlin Entertainments creatives really did go to town on this one and presented ATL with the challenge to deliver it for them. This signifies that the SEALIFE Legoland Florida aquarium tanks are amongst our most adventurous tank theming projects to date. It is the pinnacle of the ‘theme park under the sea’ theme bringing together a culmination of features such as a roller coaster, haunted house including grave stones and even a ferris wheel.

ATL has recently completed the SEALIFE Great Yarmouth ocean tank refurbishment

SEALIFE Great Yarmouth first opened its doors to the public in 1990. During that time the aquarium has seen many changes including various thematic changes to the site including the major ocean tank display. The ocean tank included a viewing theatre with large laminated glass panels. After nearly 35 years of trouble free service it was decided the ocean tank windows needed to be replaced so the opportunity presented itself to rethink the viewing area and replace the glass windows with acrylic. The original glass panels were supported on heavy glass mullions which were typical of tanks of this era. Despite being glass the original mullions were bulky and attempts to disguise them with replica stone columns in combination did nothing to add to the visual clarity of the area.

ATL were appointed to provide specialist advice on how the ocean tank viewing area could be modified enabling the use of acrylic panels. Firstly a bespoke lifting beam was designed by the clients structural engineer and installed over the tank. This beam was to be used to suspend the specialist vacuum lifting equipment required to provide support for the heavy glasses as they were being cut out from the rebate. The same system was used to safely manoeuvre and lower the panels out of the tank for disposal.

Various glazing combinations were considered including installing a single span acrylic panel. However a single viewing panel was not considered to be practical as it would involve literally removing the roof of the building with all of the consequential disruption that would bring. So it was decided that the ocean viewing area would be reconfigured using multiple acrylic panels and refined steel support elements. We went about designing and fabricating steel mullions and the existing tank frame was then modified to accept the new mullion supports being welded in on site. Once the structural work on site was complete, ATL’s GRP composite water proofing was applied to the new frame integrating it with the existing tank lining. Full height acrylic viewing panels were then delivered onto site and safely lifted back into the tank, installed and sealed into the prepared tank frames.

The behind the scenes organisation needed to safely rehome all of the fish and other inhabitants are considerable and requires months of planning so the chance to drain the major ocean display doesn’t come along too often. When it does the opportunity is seized to provide new theming features for the tank. ATL typically provide high quality tank decor as part of their package however in this instance the theming work was entrusted to a local specialist. They have recreated the wreck of the HMS Gloucester which sunk off Great Yarmouth in 1682 for more details see HMS Gloucester . Meanwhile the ATL team provided a replacement composite filter bed and pipework at the same time as installing a bespoke composite anti splash screen to the top of the tank.

Finally we designed and built some new aquarium displays to replace some end of life displays in another part of the aquarium exhibition. Using ATL’s prefabricated system of production meant that these replacement tanks could be prefabricated offsite and fast track delivered fully themed and ready to add water and fish.

Winding the clock on 35 years – it was great for the ATL team to be back on site and entrusted with such a technically challenging project and successfully delivering the SEALIFE Great Yarmouth ocean tank refurbishment.

We not only build aquarium displays at ATL, we build stunning zoo exhibits too. Our latest adventure into the zoo world saw us involved with the exciting new ZSL reptile house project

The team at ATL has been working alongside the Zoological Society of London or ZSL for many years now and we are all really proud of our latest collaboration. The secret life of reptiles and amphibians is the exciting newly opened ZSL reptile house project at the Regents Park site. The new building replaced the original reptile house that was built in 1926 and which featured in that now famous clip from Harry Potter

The ZSL reptile house project was created in a brand new building. As ever the space looked surprisingly large but thats before our exhibits started to arrive.

Since opening the ZSL reptile house project is proving immensely popular and has already welcomed vast amounts of visitors. The new reptile house project really was ground breaking and utilises all of the latest display technology. ATL supplied over thirty high quality exhibit tanks and enclosures for the project including integral life support systems. Working on a site within the incredibly popular and always busy ZSL provides a world of challenges. Our tank deliveries were carefully staged to coincide with early mornings before the zoo gates opened to the public. Some of the larger tanks were built sectionally for access but many of them could be fully prefabricated at ATL. Installing and assembling large exhibits in a relatively small site is always a challenge and not one that many other contractors are prepared to cope with. ATL’s teams are all too familiar with this challenge and as ever worked diligently to ensure that all the other site trades could also continue to work.

Representing some of the world’s most astonishing diversity, residents in the new purpose-built space at the Zoo includes the world’s largest amphibian and largest aquatic frog. As well as what you see from the visitors perspective, ATL were involved with providing the bespoke designed back of house features such as lockable access doors, fang proof mesh lids, walkways and service gantry’s. The brief for all of these were they were to be lockable and fully sealed to prevent escape. We are all very pleased with the outcome.

This exhibition features some of the rarest, some critically endangered, most unique reptiles and amphibians on Earth, from the snake-eating king cobra to mountain chickens are being saved from the brink of extinction and can be seen at ZSL. ZSL’s captive breeding programme is legendary and the ZSL reptile house project equitably houses creatures spanning across the globe, with habitats closely replicating the dense rainforests of South America, mountain jungles in Asia and giant dormant volcanoes in the Cameroon. The projects overall design really has revolutionised the way that zoo’s create modern reptile exhibits and the entire ATL team is very proud to have been heavily involved in delivering that process. We look forward to seeing how the project evolves and matures and of course working with the ZSL team on their future projects.
ATL’s swimming pool windows can be installed in various support scenarios, either flat or curved, fully or partially supported. We have recently completed work on a British super home basement swimming pool project. This project required four curved floor to ceiling submerged acrylic viewing panels, each one following the radius of a spiral staircase. These swimming pool windows stand at 5 metres high and weigh in at 1100kg each! We look forward to sharing more details when we are able.

ATL completes a project for the University of Hamburg Bio school aquarium

Following a successful tender bid, ATL has recently completed a project for the Hamburg bio school aquarium, which is part of the renowned University of Hamburg. We once again had pleasure working alongside trusted European partner, filtration specialist Aqua Sander Gmbh. Despite many obvious similarities to the requirements of public aquaria, involving the design, manufacture, delivery and installation of a series of new aquarium tanks, this was a project with a difference.

The Hamburg bio school site is a new build extension to the existing educational institution that will provide practical experience and hands on training to a wide range of industry professionals in the making. This amazing new facility is literally where tomorrows aquarium and zoo curators are born!

Throughout the fast track Hamburg bio school aquarium project we worked closely with the clients design team to ensure we could deliver the products to their exacting standards. Our in house design and production teams ensured that we delivered a product to the highest possible quality. In tank theming was styled around the clients specific references of differing mediums such as river bank mud and roots through to rock strata and formations.
