ATL have recently completed the second phase installation of replacement glazing to the existing large freshwater displays in Bristol Zoo’s acclaimed aquarium. The company’s second operation to remove the badly scratched and over specified laminated glass viewing panels and replace them with new low iron laminated glass panels supported on polished stainless steel mullions was another logistically challenging job. With the very limited access available inside the operational aquarium ATL had to once again employ specialist materials handling equipment and techniques to remove and replace the large and very heavy panels.

The staggering improvement in display visibility, the overall impression of a much lighter display area and the clean modern look of the polished stainless steel mullions all blend to help create an exciting and memorable visit. Once again ATL’s experience in taking on and delivering challenging refurbishment projects give the owners and operators of existing aquariums and attractions an extremely cost effective route to improvement without major disruption or closure.

Continuing an association that started back in 1996 with the displays fit out of the then ‘new’ aquarium at Macduff on Scotland’s east coast, ATL have recently completed and delivered their latest display.

Designed in association with the aquarium’s Displays Officer the new cylindrical display was pre-fabricated in two sections to facilitate fast and easy installation into an operational area and to allow rapid and trouble free connection to the aquarium’s existing life support system.

Manufactured in a colour to match the existing décor and avoid further decoration after installation the tank was completed ahead of schedule and is now in service following an invitation only launch event with the aquarium’s resident Octopus taking occupation of her new home.

Faced with a very demanding time scale of just 12 weeks from concept to completion the team at ATL developed an approach which overcame material supply difficulties in order to produce this experimental piece on time and to a strict budget. The completed column needed to be commissioned, tested and cosmetically finished in time to be displayed to the world at the SUEZ exhibition hosted during the recent United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris.

The complex design which was manufactured in composite GRP and acrylic needed to incorporate an integral reservoir, air compression and diffusion, pumped recirculation, liquid heating, monitoring, harvesting and lighting facilities all within a 600mm diameter x 3400mm high envelope. A very demanding set of criteria.

We are delighted to announce that the prototype was completed and delivered to the client’s premises near Bordeaux on time and on budget and that when ‘dressed up’ it made for a successful and spectacular exhibit in the Grand Palais in Paris. Our congratulations go out to Fermantalg for a truly innovative approach and for their faith in ATL to deliver the goods.

Remove and replacing the large and very heavy glass panels

The dramatic improvement in display visibility, overall impression of a much lighter display area and clean modern look of the polished stainless steel mullions all blend to help to bring this iconic aquarium bang up to date. ATL’s experience in taking on and delivering challenging refurbishment projects of this nature give owners and operators of existing aquariums a far more cost effective route to improvement than the alternative of closure and complete redevelopment.

ATL have just completed the design, supply and installation of a floor to ceiling underwater swimming pool window to a prestigious basement development in London.

The acrylic window which had to be craned over a listed building, down through three floors and then transported upright into the swimming pool measured 3.5m x 3.0m x 140mm and weighed in the order of 1700kg. The panel was specially commissioned and manufactured in Europe in 13 weeks and shipped by road to ATL’s factory for final inspection and edge preparation following which it was transported to site, lifted into position, installed and sealed in just 4 days.
